iPad 2 - Everything You Need to Know About the Home Screen

The iPad and iPad 2 device's Home Screen is essentially the "Home Base" of your device. You can run here whenever you feel the need to "start over", escape from something you didn't mean to get into or even to search for something saved on your iPad. This is the place where you access all of the applications that came with you iPad 2, as well as the apps that you have downloaded on your iPad. Surprisingly, the iPad device can handle multiple Home Screens, a feature that is usually used when people want to organize their apps by category. The later OS versions allow you to even group your apps into particular folders on the Home Screen.

Moving Between Multiple Home Screens

To move from one iPad Home Screen to the next, you will need to swipe your finger across your iPad in the left or right direction. This motion will automatically make the next screen (probably full of apps) appear.

Customize the Layout on Your iPad 2

To reorganize the icons (apps) on your iPad's screen, touch any app and hold your finger down on it for a few seconds. You will see that all the apps on the current screen will begin to shake rapidly and have a black "X" symbol appear on the upper left-hand corner of the app. This feature allows you to then press and hold any app that you want to move and simply slide it into the position of your choice. To take an app to a different home screen altogether, slide the app all the way to the left or right side of the screen and you will find yourself on the next available Home Screen. If you are moving an app that is used frequently, you may want to move it down to the "dock" so that it appears on each Home Screen.

Deleting Apps on Your iPad 2

Deleting apps on your iPad is a lot easier than you probably imagined. All you have to do is press your finger down on any app until the apps start rapidly shaking again. Look for the black "X" on the upper left-hand corner of the app you wish to delete and tap it. You will be asked if you want to delete this app. Select "yes" and the app will be instantly deleted.

Once you have moved each app in the desired position, press the Home button and you will have a Home Screen with a fresh, organized look and feel.

How to Connect Your iPad With a Bluetooth Headset

Your iPad is configured to utilize a wireless technology called Bluetooth, which enables you to make wireless connections to other Bluetooth compatible devices. Most laptop computers come with Bluetooth built in to the system as well as most cell phones. The Bluetooth device allows your iPad to connect with any Bluetooth compatible device such as keyboard or mouse, cell phone, digital camera, printer, headset etc. Bluetooth technology is for short range use therefore 33 feet is the maximum distance two Bluetooth devices should be apart from each other.

Configuring and connecting any two Bluetooth devices is very simple and can be broken into two distinct phases: Discoverable and Pairing.

Bluetooth devices only broadcast their availability when you want them to. This is called making your device "discoverable". For privacy and functionality, many Bluetooth devices need to be paired with another device before the connection is established. "Pairing" or "to pair" or "paired" is simply the technical language on making a permanent connection between two Bluetooth devices. This is useful because once two devices are paired; you never have to configure the devices again. Just turn them on and two devices will automatically connect to each other even in a room full of other Bluetooth devices. All Bluetooth devices can be "un-paired," meaning you can break the connection and pair with another Bluetooth device.

To Pair a device, you must first make it discoverable, connect to the device of your choosing, and enter a multi-digit (usually four) pass code or PIN. Pairing devices such as your cell phone with your iPad will allow you to choose a unique pass code. For other devices such as Bluetooth headset, the headset comes with a default passkey that you enter in your iPad during the pairing process. (Notes: Even though most headsets default passkey is 0000, your connection will be secure with your iPad.)

How to connect your iPad with a Bluetooth headset

Connecting your iPad with a Bluetooth headset:

1. Turn on your Bluetooth receiver in your iPad. If your iPad already has the Bluetooth receiver on you will see a Bluetooth logo in the status bar next to the battery status icon.

2. Touch "Settings" on the Home screen.

3. Touch "General" in the Settings screen.

4. Touch "Bluetooth" in the General Screen and turn the Bluetooth on.

5. Turn on the Bluetooth headset and make it discoverable. Follow the directions of the manufacture to make your device discoverable. For example, Jawbone headsets require pressing and holding both device buttons till the signal light flashes red and white.

6. Your iPad should now display the name of your Bluetooth headset. Touch the name of the Bluetooth headset. Your iPad should pair with the headset and prompt for the passkey.

7. Enter the headset passkey in the iPad PIN box. (The default key is often 0000 but check the manufacturer instructions)

How to use your Bluetooth headset to listen to music

After you've paired a headset, your iPad should make your headset the "default output audio device." Follow the steps below if this does not happen"

1. Touch "iPod" on the Home Screen to load the iPod app.

2. Once the iPod app loads check to see what icon is at the top left corner of the screen. If you a speaker icon that means the iPad is using your built in speakers as the default output audio device.

3. At the bottom of the screen you will see the status bar. Touch the Bluetooth icon.

4. Touch your paired Bluetooth headset.

5. You should now hear your song playing through the Bluetooth headset instead of the system speakers.

How to Unpair your Bluetooth headset

If you no longer plan to use a headset with your iPad, you can unpair the devices by following these steps:

1. Touch "Settings" on the Home Screen. The Settings screen should pop up.

2. Touch "General". The General screen displays.

3. Touch "Bluetooth". The Bluetooth screen displays.

4. Touch the name of the Bluetooth headset.

5. Touch "Forget this Device". Your iPad unpairs the Bluetooth headset.

Best Speck iPad 2 Cases

There is no doubt that Speck, one of the leading manufacturers of Apple accessories, did well with their innovative cases for the original iPad. Speck recently released their all-new line up of case for the iPad 2. The company waited longer than most iPad accessory manufacturers to unveil their iPad 2 cases, but it seems like it was well worth the wait. After just a couple of days of being available to consumers, Speck iPad 2 cases are almost out of stock. Take a look at the different cases that Speck designed specifically for the iPad 2.

Don't Compete with Apple - Compliment Them

It seems that Speck hit the nail on the head with their Speck SmartShell case for iPad 2. It's hard to compete with a giant company like Apple, so Speck designed to design a case that compliments and can be used in conjunction with Apple's revolutionary Smart Cover. Apple's Smart Cover only protects the screen of the iPad 2, leaving the vulnerable backside of the case exposed. Speck created a solution to this problem by designing a hard-shell case that works with the Smart Cover. This SmartShell case for iPad 2 even makes the Smart Cover have a better and sturdier fit.

Speck's FitFolio for iPad 2

Any iPad or iPad 2 owner knows that folio-style cases are the most popular among all iPad users. With this in mind, Speck created a slim folio case that can also be fashioned into a stand with multiple viewing angles. This case is made out of a polyurethane material and has a matte look. The case is currently available in black and red.

PixelSkin HD Wrap

This iPad 2 case is designed with the other PixelSkin accessories in mind. One of the most important features that this case has is its "magic microsuction" technology. You may be wondering what that is and all it does is ensures that the cover remains tightly closed over the device's screen until you make an effort to open it. A lot of folio-style iPad 2 cases have floppy front covers that don't stay closed, which is likely to put your iPad's screen in harm's way.

These are just a few of Speck's line up for iPad 2. They have also released two different types of screen protectors, which are rumored to be more effective than the ZAGG Invisibleshield screen protectors. Don't wait to pick up your Speck iPad 2 case because they won't be in stock for long.

The New iPad for 2011: What's in Store for the iPad 2

Apple has made some pretty significant improvements to the new iPad for 2011. From its lighter, thinner size to a great improvement in accessories, the new model seems to be worth the money. Let's have a look at what you'll get with the new iPad.

Accessories

Two accessories really stand out with the new iPad for 2011. The first is the HDMI output cable. What's this do?

Well, when you hook the HDMI cable between your iPad and your TV, anything that you're viewing on the iPad is now visible on the TV. It doesn't matter if it's a new movie, a slideshow of your vacation photos, an application or the web browser that you're using to surf on the iPad. It all goes to the TV output for friends and family to see.

The HDMI cable runs about $39 retail. It might sound expensive at first, but with as much as you're likely to use it, it's definitely worth the investment.

The second accessory that I really love about the new iPad is the Smart Cover. The Smart Cover attaches to the iPad magnetically on the outer sides of the screen. It's called a "Smart" cover because it brings it to life when it's opened and puts it to sleep when you close it.

And if you want to stand the iPad up on its own, you can do so with the help of the Smart Cover. It actually folds while standing to create its own stand. Pretty sweet, right?

The case doesn't come with the iPad though, unfortunately. It also costs around $39 like the HDMI cable. Again, though, it's a useful accessory, so I wouldn't consider it a waste of money to buy it.

Now on Verizon

You no longer have to use only AT&T as a carrier for your iPad's 3G wireless access. You can purchase one of three new iPad for 2011 models: The Wifi-only version, the AT&T version or the Verizon version. Each of the cellular carrier versions come with Wifi access as well, so you can always use your home network 100% for free.

New Weight

You've probably heard that the new iPad for 2011 is lighter. That's true. It weighs just over one pound, so it's definitely less weight than the old iPad.

It's also less thick. You notice how the old one looked like a boxy picture frame when you looked at it from the side view? It kind of looked like an iPhone, times three. Not anymore. Its slim design now makes it look like an iPod touch, which is tapered at the edges instead of big and boxy.

There are two more things about the new iPad for 2011 model that you NEED to know before you purchase it, but since I didn't have room to write them here, I provided everything you need to know right here at http://www.squidoo.com/ipad-new/. But don't waste time checking it out - the new iPads won't last long, and pretty soon they'll be back ordered. So get yours now!

iPad 2 - Best Apps for Note Taking and Organization

Most people are drawn to the iPad and iPad 2 devices because they believe it will somehow make them more organized. Equipped with all the tools needed for extreme organization, the iPad devices have proven to be the ultimate organizing companion. There have been even more apps created beyond the original apps that come with the iPad. Let's take a look at some of the most popular apps that promise to get you organized in one way or another.

The "Notes" App

Well, the name says it all for this app. The sole purpose of the Notes app is to allow the iPad user to take notes at a moment's notice. This is one of the free apps that comes standard and pre-loaded on all iPad and iPad 2 devices. The note taking app resembles a yellow legal pad and is extremely basic. If you are looking for an "easy-to-use" note-taking app- this is the one for you!

The Famous Evernote App

Evernote actually started out as a computer software program that was made for writers. This software allowed writers to organize their thoughts, plots and stories in a streamlined fashion. The actual software is still very popular among the reading and writing industries. However, this app has become one of the most downloaded apps for the iPad. People love this app because of its "syncing" capabilities. You can essentially turn anything on your iPad or iPad 2 into a "note", even a picture. You can then "sync" these notes to any desktop or laptop computer that you have it installed on. This app is surely one of a kind. There is a free version that limits the amount of data that can be uploaded on a monthly basis and there is also a paid version that gives you a larger amount of data uploading capabilities.

The "Stick It" App

The app is based around the ingenious concept of sticky notes. Sticky notes have been organizing people for decades and they are still doing it as a virtual stick note on the iPad devices. You can create sticky notes with text on them and then stick them to any of the Home Screens on your iPad or iPad 2. You will know when your "plate is full" because all you will see is yellow stick notes when you turn on your iPad's screen. This is more of a fun organizational app, as opposed to an effective one.

Apple iPad

Apple which is the producer of the Apple iPad produces also its official line of iPad cases. It has the word "durable" and "elegant" to describe its wonderfully created jacket which is offered in the online market to its buying customers. The long history of class and quality that has become synonymous with the Apple brand has extended itself to its black case that it has produced to accessorize their latest brand, the Apple iPad.

At some of online stores today, you can "create" your own version of cases. You can improvise and let the artist in you come out. Apple iPad cases do not only offer protection against dust and other what-have-you's that get transferred from your hands to your gadget. It also dictates who you wish others like you should see in you. Your Apple iPad case available in the market is a black case that has a sturdy exterior ideal for the individual on the go. It is well suited for protection and for viewing. It folds in an angle that is just perfect. It gives you an incredible and great viewing perspective. It is ideal in watching videos and other tasks you may want to do using the iPads LCD screen. Apple cases has reinforced panels to give you that strength and shape you need for iPad cases. It has a "microfiber interior" for sturdiness. Unfortunately, Apple has yet to give its clientele iPad cases that can explore the needs of its clients well. Take note though that there are many iPad cases available in the online market these days.

One question a customer may want to ask is "how safe is his iPad in there"? Meaning, is his iPad really safe while inside a "good purchase" of an case? As long as you are not planning in dropping it (while inside its case) from the top of the Empire State Building, it is safe. These cases are surprisingly sturdy and can protect you from unintentional bounces and bumps. If you know that you will be carrying your iPad around, you do need a case as it is sure to find a scratch or two if you don't make extra efforts for its care. A ghastly scratch on the edges of its screen will likely to contribute to additional damages in the future since it has already "broken" through its exterior. You might want to be careful next time. Before you choose a case for its fashion statement, make sure you buy it because of its quality and the protection it will offer. Never put the design or the exciting color it offers, as a consideration, first. Always go for protection. It was why iPad cases were developed in the first place. Remember also that when we say protection, we only don't mean scratches but protection from the inadvertent liquid spill, say, a cup of coffee, or rain.

As experts would advice, be safe with your iPad.

The Squabble Between iPad Vs Kindle

So you want to buy an e-Reader, but you don't know which one to buy? Well you have come to the right place because in the following article we will be looking at each of these hot products that are flying off the shelves. We will pit each one against one another under several different categories to find out which will reign supreme. But ultimately only you know which you prefer, so which is better, the Apple iPad or the Amazon Kindle?

For thousands of years man has read books! Books printed on paper! But in the last few years this has suddenly become lame. Who wants to be seen with an old fashioned book when you could be reading on a shiny new e-Reader. Many people said that the e-Reader would never catch on, but how foolish must they feel now, major egg on face! The e-Reader is one of the hottest products on the market at the moment and they are getting even more popular. Two of the most famous and equally popular are the Apple iPad and the Amazon Kindle. Both are fighting it out for this newly emerging and highly profitable market. But which one will win your custom? iPad vs Kindle, let the squabble begin!

Design

These two products have very different designs for what is essentially a simple concept, to read books electronically. The iPad follows in the footsteps of it's siblings the iPod and iPhone by being sleek, sexy and uber cool. A large, full colour LCD touchscreen allows the user to realistically turn pages with just a single swipe of the finger across the screen and you can zoom into pages if you find any print too small with the use of two fingers. The only draw back of this is persistent fingerprints, but a quick wipe with a suitable cloth gets rid of them easily. The iPad screen is also backlit with the ability to adjust the brightness, which means that you can read all of your books in the dark. The Kindle is, well let's face it, no where near as sexy or cool as the iPad, but for what it lacks in style it more than makes up for in practicality. You can read the Kindle in direct sunlight due to it's E-ink screen, however this only offers 16 shades of grey and can struggle with some graphics.

To compare the two based on design, the iPad would win hands down. Yes, the Kindle does the job of allowing the user to read books, however the iPad let's you do it in style.

Battery

The iPad has a battery life of approximately 10 hours, which is more than than enough for the average person to read in a single sitting. This is however annihilated by the Kindle which can go for days and weeks without needing a charger. Amazon claims that it will last up to a month with the wireless turned off. Kindle wins hands down!

Portability

Admittedly, either of these are infinitely better than hauling all the physical books and magazines around on your back, but for simple everyday portability the iPad is beaten by the feather like Kindle. Apple's iPad is 680g (iPad 2 is 600g) compared to the Kindle weighing in at 247g.

The iPad is 13mm thick (iPad 2 is 8.6mm) Compared to the Kindle which is 8.6mm. The Kindle can be carried around in your back pocket due to it's size (190 x 123mm), whereas the iPad needs to be carried around in a bag due to it's larger size (243 x 190mm). Therefore the Kindle is king in the portability category.

Content

The point of having an e-Reader is to let you read the books that you want to read. The Amazon Kindle has a vast library of books of over half a million for you to download and read. It also allows you to read blogs, newspapers and magazines that are uploaded to your device daily. This amazing amount of content simply cant compete with the huge volume of content that is available on the iPad. This is because the Kindle is exclusively for Amazon content, whereas the iPad has access to it's own iBooks store, the whole of the amazon kindle library through the Kindle App, and many other vast libraries of content through corresponding apps, as well as being able to download and read PDFs from anywhere on the web. The iPad wins easily due to it's vastly superior amounts of content.

Price

Currently here are the versions that you can buy for an approximate price at today's prices;

iPad 2

Wi-Fi...................................?399. ($650). (?450)

3G access...........................?2-15 a month. ($3.25-24.45). (?2.26-16.96) Varies depending on network

Kindle 3

Wi-Fi only..........................?111. ($180). (?125)

3G lifetime access.............?152. ($248). (?172)

Prices obviously vary from shop to shop, and currency to currency, and you can buy more expensive models with larger storage capacity. Amazon tends to sell their books much cheaper than iBooks do. My advice would be to shop around and find the best price/bundle for you!

Conclusion

Well pitting these two products against each other is a bit unfair due to the varying uses of the iPad. If you are after a device to solely read books on then buy a Kindle, it's a great product and serves it's purpose excellently. If however you are looking for a device to read books on AND do other things like listen to music, write, draw, watch movies, surf the Internet, do presentations, things for work, view photos, etc. then the iPad is for you. Ultimately, only you know which you prefer, so which do you think is better, the Apple iPad or the Amazon Kindle?

iPad and iPad 2 - How to Connect It For the First Time

The first time it's turned on, the iPad will ask you to connect to iTunes. Do this using the USB cable that came with the device. You can connect your iPad or iPad to any computer and it doesn't matter whether it is a PC or a Mac. You must make sure that you have iTunes downloaded on this computer before connecting your iPad to it via the USB cord. iTunes can be easily downloaded from the iTunes website.

Start out by entering the details of your iTunes account (username and password) into your iTunes app on the iPad. This is required regardless of what you plan to use your iPad for. For iTunes first-timers, be aware that you need to create a new iTunes account, which is a fairly simple process. It just takes a little bit of personal information and a valid form of payment (usually credit card).

If you bought an iPad that has 3G or Wi-Fi capabilities, you will be forced to indicate what data plan you would like to purchase for your new device. Look over the options and choose the plan that best suits your needs.

You are now ready to sync your iPad or iPad 2 with your computer for the very first time! Your iTunes account should automatically recognize your iPad, as long as it is connected to the computer via the USB cord. You will see a screen within the iTunes program that has a multitude of tabs running across the top. This is your "sync" dashboard and you will being seeing it often. You can go through the tabs yourself and explore. You will see syncing options that you may or may not want to activate. The choice is totally yours.

How and why do you force a sync?

You will always want to initiate a "forced sync" after you have made changes to your sync dashboard. Syncing after making changes will apply these changes to your device and make the necessary moves to update you iPad. You can do this two different ways. The fist way to cause a "forced sync" is to click on the "Apply" button at the bottom of any of the tabbed pages. This will cause iTunes to apply the changes you made to your iPad or iPad 2. If this is working or you just prefer to sync another way, you can always click the button that reads "Sync" on the bottom right-hand side of your iTunes window.

Syncing your iPad to a computer is one of the first things you need to do after buying your iPad or iPad 2. The second thing you need, which may be even more important for the safety of your device, is an iPad or iPad 2 case. To see if certain iPad 2 cases in stock, check out this list which is always being updated!

The Best iPad Case For Watching Movies

When you're choosing the best iPad case for watching movies, you have to be certain of one key aspect above all else - that the iPad case is well designed and crafted from strong materials. Why, you might ask? Well, because the most important part of watching a movie is the ability to be hands-free to enjoy your popcorn and soda! You'll therefore need the best case for holding your iPad up independently so that you can just sit back and relax. If nothing else, the iPad can actually get pretty heavy after a 2 hour movie - just try lying down holding it above your head, it's tough!

So let's get down to business. What is the best iPad case for the job? We obviously want one with a customisable tilt function which allows you to keep your iPad screen at a slant when watching movies, but we also want a case that is going to protect your iPad, make it look good and most importantly - not be too expensive! So this is why I have chosen the original Apple iPad case.

Now I know that there are a lot of other fantastic cases on the market, but I honestly can't see a better case for improving your media experience. The reason being, because Apple designed this case in coalition with the iPad to take advantage of all the features it offers. First off, this is a sleek case that is entirely in keeping with the smooth visuals of the iPad. If you're looking for the best iPad case to take with you to work in a professional environment, this is a great choice - colleagues will suspect nothing more than a swish notepad (which will prevent you being approached by those wanting to play Angry Birds!).

So how is this the best iPad case for watching movies? Well, it's that fantastic vertical tilt feature. Now, I know you'll probably be aware of many cases on the market that offer you the slightly elevated tilt that allows for more ergonomic typing without craning your neck, but this is entirely different. Apple have designed this tilt function to hold your iPad almost vertically, so that you can simply set it up, press play and relax just as though you were at home in front of the flatscreen. Another creative use of this feature is to set it up with a slide show of holiday photographs when guests are visiting, which emulates those fancy digital photo frames perfectly. The uses for this vertical tilt function are limitless and it's the prime reason for this case being ones of the best iPad cases in my book.

With regard to its other features, the original Apple iPad case does not disappoint. Being constructed from a special black microfibre, this case is unbelievably sturdy, offering maximum protection from the scrapes and scratches that often go unnoticed until you turn the screen to the light. Apple has also made it their aim to allow perfect functionality and access to all switches and input slots around the edges to not inhibit your experience.

Essentially, this iPad case does everything it's meant to do exceptionally - and then some for avid movie/TV/YouTube watchers.

iPad 3G: Is It Worth Getting?

The Apple iPad is a great tablet unit. It is so good that it might just go down in history as the device that changed the tablet industry for good. People cannot get enough of the iPad since its first generation a year ago. Sitcoms talk about it, movies refer to it, and just about everyone talks about it (good or bad, but it is an ice breaker).

For those of us seriously considering purchasing an iPad, the inevitable question that we all face is whether or not to get the 3G edition. It is true that people cares more about 3G than its capacity to hold data. Many people ended up sacrificing storage just so that they can get an iPad 3G. The question I seek to answer here is whether it is worth it to get an iPad 3G edition.

iPad comes with WIFI; it would be ridiculous for an internet device to not have any network capabilities, but why is the choice of getting an iPad 3G a dilemma for a lot of people? Well, for starters, it will require a bigger bank to get one.

A regular 16 GB WIFI iPad costs $499 from the Apple store, and you add $100 each to get up to 32 GB and 64 GB versions. Now, if you want the iPad 3G you will have to pay $130 more on top of the regular price tag. So a 16 GB iPad 3G + WIFI will cost $629, and subsequently the 64 GB edition is now a whopping $829.

The increase in cost may not be as much of an issue to most people if it stopped there, but it doesn't. In the States AT&T and Verizon are currently offering iPad plans. From AT&T users have the choice of a personal plan that gives you 250mb for $14.99 a month of bandwidth (how much data you can download and upload monthly), and a 2 GB data plan for $25. Most people would sign up for the 2 GB, because for the price it just makes much more sense to get it. So for personal use, and if those bandwidth are even adequate, an iPad 3G owner is looking at an extra 300 dollars a year. For example, you purchased the 16 GB iPad 3G edition like many people that faces the same dilemma and paid $629. By the end of the first year, this iPad would have cost you $929, and if you stuck with the plan, you are looking at $300 extra every year thereafter.

Problem, if you are internet savvy, or technology savvy, which most of us are now a day, you will quickly realize that 2 GB a month on an iPad is not enough, you are pretty much limited to just browsing and emails, by browsing I mean text browsing. YouTube will kill your bandwidth and it will cost you a lot more. AT&T charges $10 for ever GB over!! If this gets on the hand of a teenager that doesn't really understand where money is coming from, parents, be ready for a shocker on your next bill. The sole purpose of an iPad is to stay online! All the time! And 2 GB of bandwidth is not what the internet world runs on.

So, you realized that you need more bandwidth. Good! Because Verizon offers more than AT&T! Verizon cleverly or openly avoided the 250 MB and the 2 GB market that AT&T offers, instead, they offer a 1, 3, 5 or 10 GB plans. The 10 GB iPad 3G plan will cost you $80 a month! That is $960 a year! (I'm selling my precious motorbike for only $1200, and it is a lot more fun than an iPad 3G if you ask me). Not a lot of people that thought this through would get the 10 GB plan, now I'm not including those that don't care; I am strictly speaking to people like me, who can really appreciate $960 that maybe a little more useful spent elsewhere.

For our friends in Canada, buying an iPad is even a bigger tear dropping experience. The units are more expensive in Canada, averaging $20 more on off the price tag alone. Which doesn't make sense because a). Canadian dollars are stronger, and b). It doesn't cost that much to ship across the border. With the current conversion rate, 512 Canadian Dollars equals to 537 US Dollars. If you factor conversion rates in, iPads in Canada are close to being $40 more expensive than the exact same US models. Thankfully, the iPad 3G data plans offered in Canada by Rogers and Bell are on par with that offered in the states.

Nearing the end of this dilemma, most people would get a 16 GB iPad 3G and a 2 to 5 GB plan from either AT&T or Verizon. They would strictly instruct their kids or themselves to use WIFI at home and ONLY use 3G conservatively, no YouTube videos in the mall, no streaming music in the park no.....you get the point. Why are you even getting an iPad 3G if that is the case?

You get an iPad 3G because you love the internet, and that you feel comfortable with internet in your pocket anywhere you go whenever you go. I will not advice people to forget about iPad 3G, because let us face the truth, it is that good to be able to use internet everywhere you go, especially on an awesome device such as the iPad.

There is a solution to this dilemma. It is not perfect, but it works for most people. The magic is tethering. If you are shopping for an iPad chances are you or the person you are buying it for already have a 3G device, almost all smart phone owners have some sort of data plan. For iPhone or Androids tethering is a quite simple thing to do. You will be able to find a how to guide on the World Wide Web in no time. What tethering does is it turns your smart phone into a WIFI podcaster through your existing data plan, as a result you can connect your iPad via WIFI to your phone and use its 3G services! Since most of us have our phone all the time anyways, it is a neat combo.

The drawback will still be the same, you still want to limit your data usage, although 2 GB of data may seem a lot on a phone, but on a much more powerful device like the iPad it won't hold much long the moment you start browsing some heavy entertainment suff. The benefit of using tethering will save you that $130 from not getting the iPad 3G edition and hundreds of dollars on a separate data plan.

Some people have asked why not cancel the data plan on their phone and get the iPad plan instead. Well, if you must choose one, the phone's data plan is much more versatile. Though the iPad is quite portable it is not as pocket friendly as your phone. Last time I tried to squeeze an iPad down my trousers it ripped the pocket apart. Also, if you are one of those people that got an awesome data deal on your phone, congratulations to you, it just means you get way more data privilege through tethering than other folks.

In conclusion, it is nice to have an iPad 3G edition, but for now it is just not worth it. The extra cost and maintenance is really a deal breaker. Even if you have put aside the money for an iPad 3G, I would recommend using the money and upgrade it to a 64 GB edition, that way you can use WIFI to download all the entertainments you want and watch it on the go without using 3G.

Maybe one day it will be worth it to get an iPad 3G, maybe one day a fair price will be given to those services. $20 a month is not a lot of money, but $20 for a gig of bandwidth is just ridiculous in 2011.

Thank you for reading iPad 3G, is it worth it?

iPad - Trendy Little Device

In the current flow of society, it has become a fashion trend to own Apple products. From music all the way internet services, Apple products are at the centre of the must have gadgets spotlight. Every person wants to own an Apple product, mostly for the product name and the going trends. But what apple products are really renowned for are their innovative technological ideas, the latest product to be taking the market by storm now is the iPad.

This handy little device is the latest from our developers from the apple company. It is a combination of everything you would ever need in an application all compiled into a thin tablet the size of a thin portable book. It is capable of accessing the internet, watching videos in high definition, an unbelievable photo viewing experience and so much more.

However amidst all of those benefits, you should know that nothing you purchase will ever remain the same as it was on the first day of purchase. The iPad is no different. It is not invulnerable to wear and tear, as a matter a fact, if you are the clumsy variety and tend to drop and neglect your possessions. You would do well to expect your iPad not to last you very long. This device is not bullet proof nor is it fool proof, which is why many people have an issue when it comes to preserving and maintaining their iPad's.

Albeit that, all is not lost, for the clever developers from Apple have provided you with solutions to help extend your iPad's life, these solutions are in the form of iPad cases. Most people misunderstand the purpose of iPad cases, most of us assume they are for decoration purposes only, when in reality these cases are the things which can protect your precious iPad.

The type of iPad case you purchase varies base on the degree of protection you are seeking, the Otterbox apple iPad defender case is as sturdy as they come. Using three layers of tough Polycarbonate material, this case would be able to withstand the more violent variety of iPad owners. In addition to that, this casing does not forsake the importance of function either as it allows all iPad functions to continue on as usual while in the casing.

Another great iPad casing is the Marware Eco-Vue, this casing not only looks great but is also capable to change into a carrying case, desk stand, writing stand, and mobile grip, when you are accessing you iPad via your hands. As an added benefit this casing is also environment friendly, as it is made using eco leather. As if that wasn't the cherry on the top, did we mention that this casing is cheaper than other genuine leather cases, all this while still allowing you to keep all the advantages of real leather.

So if you're planning to invest your money into an iPad best go all the way to preserve it with the aid of iPad cases.

iPad Wi-Fi Versus iPad 3G

When you decide to go out and buy an iPad, you need to have knowledge of the iPads available in the market. A critical look at these two models reviews the following: As opposed to Ipad Internet oriented wireless network, the 3G model isn't readily available. Though once you have one, you can get limited wireless internet admission in some coffee shops where you are a regular.

When you are a person who travels a lot, it is advisable that you buy the 3G type because it will be far much cheaper to surf and it is able to access internet even in the remotest of places. The iPad 3G will also come in handy when it comes to navigation because of its GPS facility. This means that even if you are not conversant with the place you are touring you can still get your way around. This model though can offer mapping services though not as the way the iPad 3G would.

When we look at the two models in terms of weight, it turns out that the iPad 3G is slightly heavier than the Wi-Fi model. So if you are looking for a lighter gadget then you will go for iPad Wi-Fi. Technically speaking, iPad 3G, just like Wi-Fi-only version, operates by means of 802.11 a/b/g/n systems and contains UMTS/HSDPA as well as GSM/EDGE compatibility.

It requires less hustles to set up a wireless service with the iPad 3G version as opposed to the Wi-Fi counterpart. This is so because the 3G comes with a fitted SIM card. All which is required of you is to activate Cellular Data then establish your own account. This account will fall under the prepaid service plan.

As opposed to this kind, but with the iPad 3G, you can receive internet services even when you are on foreign land because 3G service is international. It is worthy noting that you might end up paying more than what you pay in the country of origin. It is therefore in order to get yourself an international data plan before leaving you country.

If you are looking for how fast you can access the internet, then you are looking for fast internet usage then this model is considerably faster than iPad 3G.

In terms of battery life the this iPad model has a longer life battery than the iPad 3G whose battery only lasts for 9 hours as opposed to Wi-Fi's 10 hours.

All said and done it is upon you to decide whether you are going for iPad Wi-Fi or iPad 3G.

iPad Competitors - Can They Hurt iPad Sales?

iPad Competitors seem to be coming from all over the place. Of course, there are all of the best Android tablets that were recently on display at the CES conference, and Windows and Blackberry seem to be gearing up for a fight on the tablet stage. But can they really compete?

Apple doe not seem to be concerned at all. Tim Cook, the Chief Operating Officer at Apple, stated that many of the iPad competitors out there, including Android tablets, are "vapor," meaning they do not exist for sale yet. But what will happen when they are available?

Here are a few strengths of the iPad along with strengths of its competitors -

iPad Strengths

First, iPad was really the first to the table when it comes to tablets. Since they were the first and have been widely successful, they have a serious amount of momentum behind them.

Second, they have a huge selection of apps. Apple did a good job of getting lots of companies to build apps for their devices, and now companies are lining up just to get their latest application approved at Apple's App Store. While Android has a lot of apps as well, they still do not have as many as the iPad, by far.

Finally, iPad competitors do not have many of the features that the iPad has. For one, many of the tablets on the market now has smaller screens than the iPad, and they do not have an operating system that is optimized for tablet computing like the iPad does.

iPad Competitors Strengths

Even with all that Apple has going for them, Tim Cook and the folks in the company should probably be a bit more concerned. iPad competitors are coming fast and in tidal waves, and they do have some advantages that may make them viable iPad alternatives.

First, many of the iPad competitors can be purchased and used several different wireless companies' networks, giving them a wider exposure. Many people are going to want to get a tablet at the same place they have a phone, and since the iPad is only available at AT&T (and now Verizon, although you have to carry around a hotspot to use it), this could mean a boon of sales for items such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, available on several carriers.

Second, while it is true that many iPad alternatives are running a smartphone operating system, that will change soon, as many of the best Android tablets coming out soon run on Honeycomb, or Android 3.0, which is optimized for tablets.

Finally, there is a lot of variety in what is offered among iPad alternatives, and some people will find that options such as having a smaller device than the iPad, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is about 7 inches by 4 inches, will be better for them and easy to carry.

Conclusion

The iPad is still king, for now. But Apple better work hard to stave off all of those iPad competitors!

iPad and iPad 2 - Best Cases With Bluetooth Keyboards

Let's face it- the iPad and iPad 2 devices and pretty much do anything you can think of. Both devices seem to be replacing the traditional laptop. This is great that technology is downsizing and becoming more convenient, but does it really make everything more convenient?

One of the things that most iPad and iPad 2 users complain about in regard to their device is the fact that they can't type emails and documents as fast as they can on the traditional computer. This is true because the iPad devices have a "touch-screen keyboard", as opposed to having a physical keyboard. Fingers just weren't made to tap a screen at rapid rates, all while having the screen recognize and record every tap with accuracy.

While this seems like a huge problem to have, especially for those who are constantly emailing and creating documents, it is one that can be easily solved. Now don't go thinking you have to buy an external keyboard, with wires and the whole bit, just to type effectively on your iPad. You can actually buy specially designed iPad cases that come with Bluetooth keyboards, which wirelessly connect to your iPad as soon as you open the case!

There are two different iPad 2 cases with Bluetooth keyboards that have been overwhelming popular among iPad 2 users:

Kensington KeyFolio Bluetooth Keyboard Case for iPad 1 & 2

Online retailers are having a hard time keeping this iPad 2 case on the shelves. Kensington has designed this leather folio case with an integrated Bluetooth keyboard. You will be amazed at your typing speed when using this keyboard and case. The battery life for the Bluetooth keyboard in this case last for what seems like forever. You don't have to worry about charging it very often. Users also like to use this case to connect their iPhone 4 to the keyboard via Bluetooth - just another added bonus!

ZAGG Zaggmate Case and Keyboard for iPad 2

ZAGG has made their brand a leader in the Apple accessory market with this case and this same case for the original iPad. The slim design and the fact that it houses a Bluetooth keyboard is unreal. This iPad 2 case is different from the Kensington case because it isn't a folio. It is an extremely hard-shell case that protects the screen and sides of the iPad 2. The back is exposed, but when it's in use the shell turns into a stand with a Bluetooth keyboard!

The technology and its advancement is remarkable. In the field of computers and calculating devices, it has progressed even more. The amount and variety of the tech products now available is unparalleled. The first computers were made in the fifties. They were of enormous sizes and expensive a lot. But now, its totally different. Even plenty of Hand-Held computers with all the functions and low prices, are available. Out of those, iPad from Apple Inc. is one of the best technology gadgets we have ever seen.

Apple's iPad is considered as a computing revolution. It has been a subject of debates about the future of technology and media. It has made a great impact on the minds of people. Having being such a device, its really expensive too. The iPad costs from $500 to $850 depending on difference in Wi-Fi, 3G and Storage Capacity. It is one of the best sellers. nearly 2 million pieces were sold within 2 months of its official release.

HARDWARE:

The iPad comes with a 9.7-inch display, a 1024x768 resolution, LED back-lighting, a fingerprint reader with a capacitive touch and scratch resistant oleo-phobic coating. For the Non 3G version, it weighs 680g, and 730g for the 3G version. It has a 1 GB, A4 Apple processor and it comes in three ranges of capacity, i.e, 16, 32, and 64 GB. It has a 2.1+EDR and a 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi for better internet connectivity. The iPad has a digital compass. There's also a GPS on-board in the 3G version and both versions have an ambient light censor and accelerometer. It also has a built-in microphone and a built-in speaker. The iPad resembles a large iPhone and more likely to an iPod Touch. Its not super heavy but it does has a healthy solidness to it.

SOFTWARE:

The iPad is running a modified version of the iPhone that is OS 3.2. It has some new user interface additions. It is upgradable up to OS 4.0. The software used in the iPad has only a few changes from the iPhone software. The common change is the modification of the apps for this size screen.

APPLICATIONS:

Every installed application has been upgraded and recoded for the larger screen. Some of the notable iPad apps include Safari for a better internet experience, Mail, Calendar, Youtube, iPod, iTunes, App store, Maps, Notes, Books, Spotlight search etc. Most of the applications used in the iPad are the modified and upgraded forms of the apps used in the iPhone.

DRAWBACKS:

Like any other gadget, it has some drawbacks as well. The modern generation computer without a camera is incomplete. Yes, the iPad doesn't has any built-in camera. This device doesn't supports Flash also, which is also a big drawback. Multi-tasking is not accessible. Browsing without listening to the music, sounds pathetic. Some other failures of this device include the unavailability of USB Ports and storage capacity limitations. That's a nightmare.

Although the iPad has some failures and drawbacks, it is still a computing revolution. The technology will continue to advance and we will definitely see yet another remarkable device, possibly in the near future.

The Best iPad Case Under $10

It's often difficult to know how the best iPad cases on the market actually differ. Well, the truth is that there is very little difference between those cases that cost just shy of $100 and those under $10 other than brand names. After buying your iPad, you're obviously not going to want to be spending an awful lot more money on the case, especially when it's in excess of $100 - imagine all the awesome apps you could get instead! Therefore, I've written this article to review the case that deserves the title of "best bang for your buck".

There's no reason why you should immediately judge a cheaper case as being of poor quality although it's easily done and is often just a natural response to those huge disparities in price. I can assure you though, the Deluxe Red iPad Case is a product that boasts quality features without that "quality" price. At just $9.78, this is definitely the best case for those on a budget.

The first fantastic feature to point out is the full red leather visual that gives your iPad an entirely new look and is a welcome change from the countless dreary black, brown and grey cases on the market. Being made from leather is also a great feature that ensures the product is sturdy and capable of keeping your iPad in pristine condition in the event of those everyday calamities. You won't have to worry about it falling to pieces in a month either!

Now I'm sure part of the reason for you to buy an iPad case is to take advantage of that elevation feature that allows you to type at an angle and better see the keys. Well, the Deluxe Red iPad Case excels in this area with a hugely customizable level of tilt that pivots from a layer of rubber as opposed to forcing you to use the specified slots which often can't satisfy every user's preference.

A final fantastic feature to point out is the ability to still easily access every slot and button around the edge of the iPad which is a common problem amongst some other cheaper cases. This really is one of the best iPad cases on the market, if not the best iPad case if you're a little short on cash. When you don't want to break the bank protecting your iPad from clumsiness, look no further than the Deluxe Red iPad Case - you have very little to lose!

Always be sure to keep your iPad zipped up and cased regardless of how much money you have to spend. A cheaper case is always better than no case, and some exceptional cheaper cases can be better than those three times the price, as we know from the Deluxe! So keep your iPad safe, they don't come cheap as I'm sure you realise.

The first of these is a basic clear iPad screen protector. These will protect the screen from scratches, fingerprints, dirt, dust and more, and will even reduce glare so you can use your iPad outdoors and in all settings.

The second of these is an iPad carrying case, also known as an iPad sleeve. These can be sleek and stylish, or they can be bright and loud, or they can be all purpose shoulder bags or more versatile cases. The array of options here is limitless, with tons of colors, sizes and materials available.

Finally in terms of popular iPad accessories that protect your device you also have iPad skins and hard cases. Skins are soft, flexible protective devices that stretch to fit over your iPad and provide more grip while protecting from scratches and bumps. Hard covers provide a bit more protection and they usually come in two pieces that snap together once they are on the iPad itself.

Moving onto popular iPad accessories that provide something else besides protection, the two most widespread current options are the wireless keyboard and the stylus. With a stylus you can seamlessly select different options, type much easier and altogether make your iPad more convenient to work with.

With a wireless keyboard you can do much more. When you team this up with your iPad you basically have a fully functional, amazingly capable and powerful personal computer. A Comparison on the Best Bluetooth Headsets for Listening to Music on the iPad

Initially our intention was to compare every kind of Bluetooth headset and headphones available. As we were using the headphones in our day-to-day lives, we realized that certain headsets were better designed for particular functions. Optimizing a product design for one usage often involved degrading important characteristics of another function. This is analogous to building a car. If you want something fast that can go from 0-60 is 4 seconds flat; it's probably not going to get the best gas mileage, or be of much use hauling 3 kids around town. The bottom line is those who want the best headphones for listening to music, or watching videos, have a different product profile than mobile warriors looking to make VOIP calls (more on this topic at the end).

In this product comparison, we are looking for the best Bluetooth headphones to listen to music and watch movies on your iPad. While we emphasized sound quality for music and video playback, virtually all the Bluetooth headsets have built in microphones and VOIP capability. Next week we will have a product comparison for Bluetooth headsets designed primarily for voice conversations that are iPad compatible, and play stereo sound.

The criteria for our product recommendations are sound quality, fit/comfort, battery life, features, and build quality. The greatest weight is our scoring was given to sound quality (approx 40% of the weighting); with the other 4 categories given weights equally divided with the remaining allocation. All the Bluetooth headsets recommended were tested with both the iPad 1 and iPad 2 running iOS versions as early as 4.2. Going back to our car analogy, you cannot expect an inexpensive car like a Ford Focus to compare with the performance of a high end car like a Ferrari. With that in mind, we also broke our recommendations into the best iPad Bluetooth headphones within a given price range.

One last tip before we begin is there no such thing as a Bluetooth headset designed for just the iPad. So if you are browsing online, or walking through the aisles of Best Buy looking for products with the words "iPad Bluetooth Headsets" scrawled on the packaging, you will be severely limiting your selection. When shopping for a Bluetooth headset or headphones for your iPad, just look make sure it's a stereo headset or A2DP capable. The Bluetooth headset you buy for your iPad should work with your cell phone and Bluetooth enabled computer as well.

Best Bluetooth Headsets for your iPad under $40: Arctic Sound P311

Arctic Sound P311 (MSRP $39.99)

Overview:

Our winner for the best Bluetooth headset under $40 is the Arctic Sound P311. If you are a techie the name will sound familiar as Arctic Sound is a division of Arctic Cooling, a Swiss owned company that makes CPU cooling and computer accessories. While the MSRP of the P311 is $39.95, you will find this headset online for around $30. It does everything you want out of a headset at a fair price. We loved this headset over more expensive Motorola and Sony models. Sound quality was indistinguishable from the Motorola and Sony models but the features that won us over were the amazing battery life and the folding design. In addition to testing it with the iPad, we were able to pair this headset with a PlayStation 3, laptops (MAC & PC), Android Phone, iPhone, and Nokia Phone with no problems.

Sound Quality

We paired the Arctic Sound P311 with an Android phone, iPhone, and Nokia to test sound quality when making phone calls. Our friends on the other end could hear us just fine. Sound quality was crisp and there was no lag or choppiness in the conversation. For VOIP and cellular pairing, the P311 includes a hidden integrated microphone, built-in sound processor, and Advanced Clear Voice Capture (CVC) technology. The latter is just a fancy way of saying noise cancelling technology. While the microphone picks up on your voice during calls exquisitely, the noise cancelling function is not on par with higher end headsets such as the newest model Jawbone or Plantronic headsets. If you plan on speaking with a person in a noisy place such as Starbucks during the morning rush, the background noise will bleed into the conversation more than the high end headsets.

For music and video playback the sound was excellent for a device of this class. The music was crisp and vibrant at higher range. The built in high fidelity drivers were able to process sound in low range without any cracks or squeaks. The bass does sound flat when compared to higher end headsets and surround sound speakers. These are not the headsets to do sound editing on your MacBook Pro, but if you are watching Netflix on your iPad or listening to your iPod app, sound quality is excellent.

Fit/Comfort

Weighing just 2.5 ounces, the P311 is very light. The closed acoustic ear cups provides good comfort as we could where them all day without a fatigue or irritation. Some of our readers might not like the behind the ear design but we found this ideal if you are planning to use these headsets at work, as they will not mess up the hair like over-the-head headsets.

Features

One of the most useful features is the right earphone has 5 buttons that control certain settings. They allow you to answer a call, adjust the volume and forward/reverse the music. The device you pair the headset with must allow these functions but we found most do. If paired with a cell phone and there is an incoming call, the Inter-Call-Manager will play a ringtone into the headset. The music will then be paused and will resume after ending the call. Pairing to my iPad was not a problem and the controls worked for volume, skip, reverse, and pause. The Antic Sound P311 does not support multipoint Bluetooth.

Battery Life

The Arctic Sound P311 has a built in rechargeable 400mAH lithium polymer battery similar to the lithium polymer technology Apples uses for the iPad and MacBooks. The manufacturer claims up to 20 hours of listening/talk time for the Arctic Silver but you can only achieve that time under very unrealistic circumstances. When talking on the headset for over an hour and spending the rest of the time listening to music at mid volume, we averaged 12-14 hours per charge. While not the 20 hours claimed by the manufacture, this was enough for a full day's work and double the battery life of other headsets. Mobile warriors will love that the Arctic Sound P311 headset charges via mini USB instead of a proprietary design. If have a Blackberry, you can use that AC Adapter or USB cable to charge the headset leaving one less item to lug around. Charging time starting from a dead battery is about 4 hours. A USB cable is provided for you to plug into your computer or iPad AC adapter.

Build Quality:

The Arctic Sound P311 comes with a nylon hard case so they easily tuck away safely in your briefcase, purse, or backpack. The headphones themselves are made from hardened plastic. Because of its folding design, it can be damaged if you too much force is applied against the hinges. By no means does it make the headsets fragile as the headset was dropped accidentally a few times without any damage.

Bluetooth Compatibility: Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, A2DP, AVRCP, HSP, HFP 1.5

Best Bluetooth Headsets for your iPad under $100: Plantronics Backbeat 903+

Plantronics Backbeat 903+ (MSRP $99.99)

Overview:

The Plantronics Backbeat 903+ is the upgrade for Plantronics best selling 903/906 series. The Backbeat 903+ was released last year incorporating the newer Bluetooth standards. The most important feature this headset has over the Arctic Sound P311 is the multipoint Bluetooth technology. What multipoint allows you to do is pair two Bluetooth devices with one headset. As long as your devices support multipoint, you can pair your cell phone to the Backbeat 903+ while streaming audio from your iPad. Most new phones support multipoint including the Android and Blackberry platforms. Both the iPhone and iPad support multipoint as long as you are running iOS version 4.1 and above.

Why is multipoint so important? If you have multipoint, you will not miss a call if you are listening to music on your iPad or iPod! If your iPhone rings while your blasting away Metallica on your iPad, the Backbeat 903+ supporting multipoint will pause the music, and notify you of an incoming call. The one touch features on the Backbeat 903+ will allow you to answer the phone without having to physically answer it.

We recommend not paying MSRP by searching online for the best deal. We bought our Backbeat 903+ on Amazon for $69.99.

Sound Quality

In terms of sound quality when making phone calls, the Plantronics Backbeat 903+ is superior to the Arctic Sound P311. This is the result of the superior noise cancelling feature and windshield. The headset has two microphones instead of just one. Both microphones are positioned be shielded from direct wind. Plantronics calls their noise cancelling technology AudioIQ2. Basically what happens is they microphones pick of your voice and digitally erase the background noise to provide a superior phone conversation.

The Backbeat 903+ has a rich and vibrant sound, and can stream music, video, and app sounds from your iPad. The headset has an enhanced bass that provides a deeper, and more earth moving feeling than the P311. While the Backbeat 903+ does have noise cancelling technology, it should be noted that it is for voice calls and not streaming music.

Fit/Comfort

Like the Arctic Sound headset, the Plantronics 903+ is a behind the ear design with close fitting earpieces. Each earpiece adjusts three ways for a custom fit.

Features

The Backbeat 903+ has a unique technology called OpenMic that allows you to hear what's going on around you with a touch of a button. The Backbeat also supports one touch controls allowing you to start/end calls, and control music functions such as volume and pause/play. Voice alerts tell you if there is a low battery, when there is an incoming call, and when you have lost a phone connection. You can also monitor the battery level of the headset on your iPhone with built-in software. And as discussed earlier, the Backbeat 903+ supports multipoint allowing you to connect to your cell phone and iPad simultaneously.

Battery Life

Battery life provides 7 hours talk time. Standby time is 7 Hours. Charge time is 3 hours and the charging interface is micro USB. An AC Adapter is provided.

Build Quality

The Backbeat is constructed of high impact plastic designed for more abuse than a typical headset. If you are runner or plan to use the Backbeat in the gym, you will love its sturdiness and flexibility. The headphones can folded up and a soft protective bag is provided.

Board Games on the iPad

The Apple iPad is an incredible device that's making waves in board gaming communities the world over, but why? What do traditional board games have to do with the iPad? Can physical games with lots of pieces faithfully be converted to a small touch screen device? Are they any areas in which the iPad is actually better than the physical board game?

Despite what many hardcore board game enthusiasts may want to believe, the iPad is actually a great addition to the wardrobe full of bits and pieces, "real life" physical board games. But it will never replace the physical ones - just as it will never replace the experience of gathering around a table with 4 friends.

The size of the screen, for the time being, is the primary limitation on the iPad gaming experience - yet the size is also an advantage. For instance, the combination of the iPad, iPhone, and Nintendo DS have utterly destroyed the "travel" game industry. No longer are we forced to play monopoly with tiny pieces that get lost down the back of the seat! Long trips with the children are a whole lot easier, now. The small screen does mean however that it is not particularly suited to being placed in the center of a large table and sat around. An impressive attempt at small-scale coffee table gaming was by Days of Wonder's "Small World" board game app, which includes a coffee table mode as well as the standard "pass and play" modes. In coffee table mode, the iPad would detect that it is laying horizontally on a tabletop and automatically keep the board in a fixed position, with each players interface area kept on the appropriate side of the screen. However, this style of play was limited to 2 players, as the interface elements for more than 2 players simply couldn't fit on the screen. The "pass and play" mode is standard to nearly every board game conversion for the iPad yet, allowing for more players by passing the device around. Indeed, "pass and play" is the only mode possible when games include some element of secrecy regarding players cards - using the iPad to play Poker with a friend sitting opposite you simply isn't possible with just one device. Obviously, with more than one iPad, we can achieve a somewhat similar experience in terms of gameplay, but the social interaction would plummet - each player may as well be staring at a computer screen.

Which bring us to our next point, one in which iPads really win over on physical board games - the fact that physical games require physical players. A weekly gaming session is difficult at best to organise - scheduling conflicts, gaming preferences - can sometimes lead to an unsatisfactory gaming get-together. With an internet connection, and iPad though - you can potentially be playing with people all over the world who want to play the same game as you, at the same time that is convenient to you. Of course, the social interactions aren't the same, but the gaming experience generally is. Carcassonne is possibly the best example yet of internet gaming done right on the iPad. When you select to play an internet game, the app doesn't ask you for usernames, passwords, to choose a game lobby or server - it just goes out to find you an opponent and gives you an estimated time. Most iPad board game conversions sadly have yet to include an internet gaming option.

So far we've only talked about how the iPad can replace the physical versions, but I think they can also co-exist and in fact complement them. As I said, getting a gaming group together can be difficult, so taking time to explain a new game and give it a run through before playing "for serious" is time consuming and wasteful. The iPad is a great way to practice before the real social game, to make sure you fully understand the rules and have an idea of strategies that might be played against you. And even if you have some real life experience of the rules, the iPad is a great way to discover new play styles that you might never have seen before - remember that most of the board games apps have AI routines developed by the board game creators themselves, so they usually know a trick or two that your friends might not.

The iPad can also complement the real board game even during those social gaming sessions. Scoring points, for instance, has traditionally been a rather tedious but necessary part of board games - not so with the iPad. "Agricola", game in which players attempt to create the best farm, is a great example of this. At the end of the game, points are scored according to the size of your house, the material it is made of, the number of family members, how many fields you have managed to create... all in, there are about 15 different metrics you must check on a scoring table for. The Agricola companion app makes it easy to calculate everyone's score by walking you through each metric and giving you a simply "number dial" element to easily input it all. The app then calculates it according to the built-in scoring tables, makes a total, then shows the results and overall winner. It even stores player data (including a photograph), and you can save every game result as well as where the game was played!

But perhaps most importantly, the iPad opens up the board gaming hoping to so many more people. It has to be said that most designer board games are generally cost prohibitive - without a personal recommendation from a friend, it's hard to lay down $70-$100 for a board game that you've never heard of. Monopoly is the complete opposite of designer board games - it's known by everyone, and the game play is relatively non-compelling. Designer board games however are known by so few, yet their game play is often magnitudes more interesting than anything in your typical high street retailer. So personally, I love the fact that more people will get to know the board games I love, through the iPad.

So what are you waiting for? Here you can find details on all of the games mentioned, as well as the best iPad board games, reviewed and ranked by users. Careful though, before you know it you'll buying the real things and refitting the back bedroom into a gaming room!
